1050-850BD    Arkhelan’s heirs are not strong, and the Empire’s power wanes over the centuries; invading Naida from the south destroys the remnants of the Empire of the Dragon and institutes the Empire of Hurimar.

515-465BD    The remaining Andu refugees (save a few who settle Tenouire) cross the Straits and settle in Cerilia, populating the coasts and river valleys of modern-day Anuire. Those of the House of Boru sail into the Sea of Storms instead and are presumed lost.

The Exodus, immigrants and settlement patterns

The original Exodus is said to have numbered exactly 50.000 people, all sworn servants of the Dragon and steadfast followers of Shaedan Draco. Four out of five of the Exodites were Anuireans; most of the rest were Rjurik. Ten of these initial fifty thousand were warriors, the rest were various forms of support personnel (indeed, as many as five thousand of these had actually been in Aduria for several years before the actual Exodus, making ready to receive Shaedan and the rest of the men).

While in Anuire Shaedan could use his gold and his connections to feed his men, but once in Aduria they needed to become largely self-sufficient. So when the Exodus was planned it became apparent that the initial group would be nowhere near big enough to actually support the fighting strength – let alone expand the colony into a great Empire. Ten men were needed to stand behind every soldier; and that was a bare minimum. The Keepers claimed that fifty men – 500.000 – were needed for each active soldier if the colony was to prosper AND for two full legions to be kept ready for war.

Shaedan, however, chose to ignore his counsel. Fully convinced of his manifest destiny he decided to proceed and deal with the problem later; as far as he was concerned he need only make a brief appearance in Anuire and the masses would follow him. It didn’t work out quite that well in reality – Shaedan really had to work hard to attract additional settlers, and the two initial legions spent most of the early years farming and building (but that is another story).

Shaedan did manage to attract some new immigrants, largely through the actions of the Guardians of the Four Temples, gaining a mixture of Anuireans, Khinasi, and Rjurik in the process. The big break came in the form of the followers of Lyesha, the Dawn Goddess. All her flock, almost two hundred thousand people, hailing primarily from the Eastern Marches of Anuire, accepted Shaedan’s offer and went west aboard the ships of the Bronze Order. Now the Dragonholds suddenly held more than a quarter of a million Dragonsworn – still not enough according to the keepers – but good enough to let Shaedan embark some serious construction and settlement projects and to go on his first major campaign; the pacification of the Oeried Fiefdoms.

Immigration would continue in later years – a steady tickle of Anuireans, Rjurik, and Khinasi (as well as a smattering of others). Never again would there be any massive relocation of people, every month a few hundred or a couple of thousand would come, but nothing like when the Lyeshans arrived to call the Dragonholds home.

The majority of the Exodites and early immigrants settled on the coast near Dracropolis and along east and west banks of the Kier River valley. These were fertile lands (ruled by the lords of the Draconic Guard, 1st Legion, and 2nd Legion) that only needed taming and settling to yield good harvests. Later immigrants, meaning those arriving after the arrival of the Lyeshans, would find good land scare in the Draconic heartland, and were largely settled closer to the southern mountains or along the Orid River (lands under the newly mustered 3rd Legion and 4th Legion respectively).

As prime arable land has become scarcer in Oeried, new settlers are sometimes sent to other areas – meaning Rhandel, Lurech, Alitaene, and Mor Atha (and presumably to other, even more distant lands once they have been brought under the Dragon). Here settlers risk coming into conflict with local land-owners, so the Order takes special precautions (such as settling in dense clusters that can be easily watched and protected by local Draconic forces). In theory, of course, the Emperor owns all land, save that given to his servants, but in practice even the Draconic Knights can’t simply seize land without just cause. The alternative is settling in Oeried, but being settled on second-rate farmlands (new arrivals are sometime given a choice, sometimes not).

Here follows an approximate breakdown of population figures for the Draconic Empire at various dates:

Exodus (1825 HC): 50.000 (Shaedan’s initial followers)
Initial settlers (1825-31HC): +50.000 (attracted by Shaedan and the Guardians)
Lyeshan settlers (1831HC+): +200.000 (the Goddess Lyesha’s followers)
Late settlers (1831-1889HC): +100.000 (current influx of about 5.000 people each year)
Native converts (1850-1889 HC): +150.000 (currently about 10.000 people each year)
Population growth (1825-1889HC): +750.000 (current population growth ca. 2-3% per annum)
Current Dragonsworn population (1889 HC): 1.250.000
Current subject population (1889 HC): 9.400.000 humans; unknown number of non-humans (undying, ashen elves, merfolk, centaurs, wemic, etc.)
Total population of Draconic Empire (1889HC): Approx. 10.650.000 humans; 13 million (?) with non-human peoples

Population growth - The Dragonsworn

The population growth (net change in population) of the Dragonholds is about 2-3% per annum for the Dragonsworn, giving an estimated doubling time of 25-35 years. Having children is a key occupation for Dragonsworn women – many young women end up marrying veterans that have mustered out, serving the Dragon as mothers and wives. Many women who serve the Dragon in other capacities get children later in life, and not as many. The average age of women having their first child is 22, and each woman will statistically bear about five children. Infant mortality is low, and all children can expect to have access to security, nutrition, and education. Average lifespan of Dragonsworn (except Drakes) is around 65 years.

The extremely high figure population growth figure is only possible for as long as the Draconic Empire remains at (relative) peace, additional areas can be settled, and the Imperial Bureaucracy manages to govern effectively. Population growth of this kind is usually not seen, because the availability of land and the technology used to cultivate it remains more or less constant for long periods of time. Normally any growth in population is only temporary, and will be checked by a rise in poverty, famine, and disease. The Dragonsworn are an exception – they are cultivating new lands and using new techniques – even magic – to harvest more resources.

Draconic scholars have estimated that by 1910-25 HC the Dragonsworn population will be around 2,5 million, and growth rates will have stabilized at a lower level with a doubling time of 35-50 years. By the year 2025 HC the number of Dragonsworn will hopefull have reached an impressive 10 million (some optimists are saying 20 million), after which growth will be limited by access to land and resources. This figure is extremely important, because it implies that the Draconic Empire should be able to field approximately 20 active full legions (100.000 men) at any one time, replenish any losses they might take, maintain garrisons and supply auxiliaries, and be able to provide a reasonably prosperous and secure life for its subjects. So short of invading and destroying the Draconic Empire, the Shadow will have to contend indefinitely with the full might of the Draconic Legions.

Those left behind - Cerilia

The total Cerilian population can only be guessed at – figures range from 30 to 60 million, with a maximum population somewhere in the 50-80 million range. As can be seen from the Aduria section below – Cerilia is far more conductive to human settlement that is Aduria in its current state. Climate is one factor, terrain is another; Cerilia more or less lacks the vast tracts of undesirable and unsettled lands, and neither does it have huge area ruled by hostile non-human peoples (at least not on the Adurian scale).

Unfortunate then, that the people of Cerilia have turned their backs on the Draconic Empire and have decided to forge their own destiny in face of the Shadow. Or perhaps extremely fortunate – the Shadow is on the verge of being resurrected, and the Draconic Knights still desperately needs time to subjugate Aduria and make ready for the Last War. If the death or enslavement of those Cerilians can buy the Emperor the time he needs, then they have served their purpose.

Some of the Cerilian are likely to immigrate to the Holds as previously explained; and that figure might rise as the Shadows rears its ugly head. But the Emperor cannot indiscriminately allow everyone to enter the Lands of the Dragon – only those who swear service and are certain not to be in league with the Shadow can be allowed to enter, lest corruption gain a foothold within the Dragonholds!

The Dragon does of course have a following in Cerilia – especially in Anuire, but also in other lads – in the form of the other Orders and their supporters. But these Orders have either joined with the Enemy or decided to stay and fight, and they are not to change their minds once the fighting begins in earnest. The Draconic Knights also have a small presence in Cerilia – the Fang is still under Shaedan’s control, even if it is but as pale shadow of its former self. The men of the Fang continue to watch Kal-Saitharak, looking for sings of the Shadow’s return.

Subject peoples - Aduria

Subject peoples continue to live as they always have. They generally have much lower growth rates – although several subject peoples have much higher birth rates and mothers start bearing children earlier, actual population growth is limited by higher infant and adult mortality. And, as mentioned previously, actual long-term growth in population is limited by a general lack of security, access to new lands, or any form of technological advancement.

For example, the lands of the former Empire of Alitaene holds about half of the current non-Dragonsworn population in the Draconic Empire – more than 4 million souls. But this number has been relatively stable for nearly two centuries; a census from 1367 HC puts the population at about 3.5 million, a net growth of only half a million in over 200 years! And the number is down from the 6 million or so living there during the heyday of the Anuirean Empire, testament to the fact that large tracts of formerly cultivated lands have turned into wastelands – mostly due to a drier climate.

Now, a subjects of the Draconic Empire, the subject realms can expect to benefit somewhat in terms of access to security and techniques not previously available, so that both their projected growth rates and the maximum sustainable population will rise somewhat (limited somewhat by the need to pay tribute to Dracropolis and loss of the best lands to the Dragonsworn). Numbers are uncertain, but if left undisturbed the population increase might level of at around double the current level, taking between 70 and 100 years to reach that figure.

Population summary

Why all this talk of numbers? Surely the courage and dedication of the few and the proud are more important than masses of commoners? Indeed it is, but it needs to be remembered that quantity has a quality all of its own – for every Draconic Knight there are a score men or more that do nothing but make him able to go to war! And 80 more people that make sure the lands that Knight protects continues to grow and prosper – for what point is there in defending if what you are protecting simply withers and dies?

If there is no mass second exodus from Cerilia, then by the end of the next century there will be around 5 million Dragonsworn and around 20 million subject peoples living in the currently conquered lands. If the rest of Aduria is conquered, the number of subjects might become doubled, and there will be room for the full 10 million Dragonsworn. 50 million humans (non-humans are able to make use of lands marginal to humans and are in addition to this number) is the number the Draconic scholars believe Aduria is able to support – so if there are to be more Dragonsworn, there needs to be less subject peoples. Either that, or centuries of uninterrupted economic growth and expansion to open up new lands for settlement.

Well, the numbers above might be too optimistic. The Shadow might not oblige the Dragon and wait for so many years. If all-out war breaks out sooner or the Draconic Heartland is razed, then the situation will be completely altered. But the numbers should give an idea as to the possibilities and pitfalls that face the Emperor every day.
