Epic Birthright

What is Epic Birthright?

Epic Birthright is an ongoing table-top DnD campaign set in the old TSR setting of BIRTHRIGHT. Epic BR was started mainly to playtest Epic Rules for DnD when they were published. Based upon devlopments from an earlier AD&D 2nd Edition BIRTHRIGHT game, the campaign sports an incerdible array of detailed background and characters. The game has both adventure and domain play, and is designed so that the greater Epic campaign creates the framework in which other non-epic campaigns can be played out.

Protagonists

The four chief protagonists (each has his own campaign that mesh into the other two) of Epic BIRTHRIGHT are related to each other; Moergan being the father of Shaedan and Shaedan the father of Moerdred.

Moergan Draco is the Celestial Dragon; a demi-god (later lesser god) whose portfolio covers the protection of Anuire and the desctruction of Shadowspawn (aberrations, evil magical bests, evil monstrous humanoids, evil outsiders and undead in particular). The Celestial Dragon is also known as the Shield of Anuire (and sometimes as the Sword of Heaven). His domains are Destruction, Law, Magic, Protection and War.

Shaedan Draco is the Celestial Emperor and the Warlord of Light; a mighty ruler who controls a growing Empire in northern Aduria and legions of highly skilled and zealous templars and mage-priests. He is the son of Moergan Draco by the Lady Drake (a powerful sorceress and drake; a sort of half-dragon).

Moerdred Draco is the son of Shaedan Draco by his lover and half-sister Sannaene (more commonly known as the Harbringer, one of the chief servants of the Shadow). Moerdred is a skilled fighter and general, leading the 6th Legion to conquer more lands to add to his father's glory.

Michael Draco is the son of Moerdred Draco by his sister Naneiwen. Michael is, unlike most of the Dracos, a likeable and soft-spoken young man, given to tricks, pranks and general merrymaking. It seems he has a small arcane talent, once again something not often found among male Dracos.

Antagonists

Azrai the Shadow is the primary villain of Epic BIRTHRIGHT, even though he has yet to make an appearance. Azrai is the evil God of Magic, Darkness, Death and Lies that everyone thought destroyed at the Battle of Mount Deismaar almost two thousand years ago. It turns out he was only severely weakened and imprisoned somewhere dark and distant. All this time he has slowly been recovering his power and now his servants are fianlly ready to bring him back. If they succeed, the world will be covered in a second darkness, from which it might never emerge.

Moerdred Draco the Elder, Moergan Draco's oldest bastard son, is the real recurring major villain of the campaign. A powerful evil wizard, Moerdred has followed in his father's footsteps and Ascended to Godhood as the Black Dragon. The Black Dragon labors ceaslessly to bring about the return of Azrai and to make trouble for the champions of light. As a divine dragon with extensive magical knowledge he is not slouch in combat, but he much prefers to work through subterfuge. Nothing pleases the Black Dragon more than to see friend turn upon friend and mistrust break sworn allies apart. His plots-within-plot-within-plots are a constant source of consternation for the Order.

The mysterious Harbringer is another major villain. A lot of foul events have been attributed to the Harbringer, and more have been foretold (of particular concern is that Emperor Shaedan knows that the Harbringer will eventually murder his eight consorts). The big problem is that the indetity of the Harbringer is unknown; there are several suspects, the most likely being Sannaene Draco, the ninth daughter of the Dragon (and mother to Moerdred the Younger). Yet it could potentially be a few others, and the Emperor really cannot afford not to be completely certain.

More immediate and physical enemies include the the Fallen Chapters; the Black were the first to be seduced into the service of the Shadow, but the Red and the Blue followed some time later. The allegiance of the White and Green are uncertain, but in the comming war there are no neutral parties, only allies or enemies.

Of course, this being BIRTHRIGHT, politics and intrigue within the ranks of the Order are perhaps the greates source of trouble. High-ranking members of the Order plot and gather power like any good Anuirean noble; they do it not for themselves of course, but in the name of God and for the good of all (but  as they say: "same shit, different wrapping). Oh, and the protagonists are not exactly your average shiny heroes either; a lot of the time they are their own worst enemies.
